The Story Behind Our Gospel Restoration Teaching Kit

It was a strange experience, cutting up a small picture of Christ. It wasn't something you'd normally think a missionary would do. However, my companion and I had a point to make and this was the clearest way to do it.

Missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints often use object lessons or homemade teaching kits to help teach others about the principles of the gospel. Picture pieces of paper with hand-drawn visuals laminated with strips of clear tape. This is why my companion and I were cutting up a picture of Christ.

We wanted to teach about the Restoration and how the truth of Christ was lost. When each piece was put back together, the full painting of Christ emerged and it represented the Restoration of all things.

Many years later, this humble little tool was the inspiration behind our brand new teaching kit. We loved providing a Plan of Salvation Teaching Kit to missionaries, families, and teachers. But as I thought back to my mission I knew I wanted to do more. With the resources in our company, I knew we could make something awesome.

So, I pulled out my Preach My Gospel and started thinking about how we could create a teaching kit that somehow compacted all the many principles of the Restoration lesson while making it simple in design AND keeping the idea of restoring Christ as the focal point.

I started with a simple sketch that served as the basis of the idea. Then, we carefully moved onto rough (very rough) paper models.

Finally, we worked with our illustrator to bring each piece to life! One thing I love about working for LDS Bookstore is the opportunity to imagine and create new products that are full of inspiration and use for real Latter-day Saints. I know this is the teaching kit I would have wanted all those years ago as a missionary. With so much emphasis on the Restoration now, it is also useful for families and teachers who want to help others embrace these important truths.

Priesthood Ordinance Cards: Helping Us Feel Ready to Serve

One of the greatest gifts of holding the Priesthood is having the opportunity to serve. From opportunities through the Aaronic Priesthood and Melchizedek Priesthood, the calling of being a Priesthood holder is to use God’s power on the Earth to bless the lives of those around us.

When using the power of the Priesthood, there are specific phrases and steps that must be followed in administering to those around us. These step-by-step instructions are often printed in the Missionary’s Handbook, or on the Gospel Library Application. However, sometimes it can be difficult to navigate these resources in finding the exact needed instructions. To make things easier, we have on hand at LDS Bookstore an Ordinance Card, which has all of the instructions found in the Handbook and App on a small card that can fit in your wallet. Listed below are the instructions that are found on the Ordinance Card:

Sacrament Ordinances

Blessing of the Bread

“O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it, that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of Thy Son, and always remember him and keep his commandments which he has given them; that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.”

Blessing of the Water

“O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this water to the souls of all those who drink of it, that they may do it in remembrance of the blood of thy Son, which was shed for them; that they may witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they do always remember him, that they may have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.”

Baptismal Ordinances

Performing a Baptism

The elder or priest officiating raises his right arm to the square.
States the person’s full name and says, “Having been commissioned of Jesus Christ, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen” (D&C 20:73)
Has the person hold his or her nose with the right hand (for convenience); then the priesthood holder places his right hand high on the person’s back and immerses the person completely, including the person’s clothing.
Helps the person come up out of the water.

Performing a Confirmation

The Melchizedek Priesthood holder officiating states the person’s full name.
States the ordinance is performed by the authority of the Melchizedek Priesthood.
Confirms the person a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Uses the words “Receive the Holy Ghost” (not “receive the gift of the Holy Ghost”).
Gives a priesthood blessing as the Spirit directs.
Closes in the name of Jesus Christ.

Blessings and Ordinances

Anointing with Oil

A Melchizedek Priesthood holder puts a drop of consecrated oil on the person’s head.
Places his hands lightly on the person’s head and calls the person by his or her full name.
States that he is acting by the authority of the Melchizedek Priesthood.
States that he is anointing with oil that has been consecrated for anointing and blessing the sick and afflicted.
Closes in the name of Jesus Christ.

Sealing the Anointing

Normally, two or more Melchizedek Priesthood holders place their hands lightly on the head of the person. The one seals the anointing:

Calls the person by his or her full name.
States that he is sealing the anointing by the authority of the Melchizedek Priesthood.
Gives a blessing as the Spirit directs.
Closes in the name of Jesus Christ.

Blessings of Comfort & Counsel (Father’s Blessings)

To give a father’s blessing or another blessing of comfort and counsel, one or more Melchizedek Priesthood holders place their hands lightly on the person’s head. Then the priesthood holder who gives the blessing:

Calls the person by his or her full name.
States that the blessing is performed by the authority of the Melchizedek Priesthood.
Gives a priesthood blessing as the Spirit directs.
Closes in the name of Jesus Christ.

Consecrating Oil

One or more Melchizedek Priesthood holders must consecrate olive oil before it is used to anoint the sick or afflicted. No other oil may be used. To consecrate oil, a priesthood holder:

Holds an open container of olive oil.
Addresses Heavenly Father.
States that he is acting by the authority of the Melchizedek Priesthood.
Consecrates the oil (not the container) and set it apart for anointing and blessing the sick and afflicted.
Closes in the name of Jesus Christ.

Conferring the Priesthood and Ordaining to an Office

To perform a priesthood ordination, one or more authorized priesthood holders place their hands lightly on the person’s head. Then the priesthood holder who performs the ordination:

Calls the person by his full name.
States the authority by which the ordination is performed (Aaronic or Melchizedek Priesthood).
Confers the Aaronic or Melchizedek Priesthood, unless it has already been conferred.
Ordains the person to an office in the Aaronic or Melchizedek Priesthood and bestows the rights, powers, and authority of that office. (Priesthood keys are not bestowed in conferring the priesthood or ordaining to one of these offices.)
Gives a priesthood blessing as the Spirit directs.
Closes in the name of Jesus Christ.

Dedicating a Home

Church members may dedicate their homes as sacred edifices where the Holy Spirit can reside and where family members can worship, find safety from the world, grow spiritually, and prepare for eternal family relationships. Unlike Church buildings, home are not consecrated to the Lord.

Naming and Blessing a Child

When blessing a baby, Melchizedek Priesthood holders gather in a circle and place their hands under the baby. The person who gives the blessing:

Addresses Heavenly Father.
States that the blessing is performed by the authority of the Melchizedek Priesthood.
Gives the child a name.
Gives a priesthood blessing as the Spirit directs.
Closes in the name of Jesus Christ.

Dedicating Graves

A person who dedicates a grave should hold the Melchizedek Priesthood and be authorized by the priesthood officer who conducts the service. The person who dedicates the grave:

Addresses Heavenly Father.
States that he is acting by the authority of the Melchizedek Priesthood.
Dedicates and consecrates the burial plot as the resting place for the body of the deceased.
Prays that the place will be hallowed and protected until the Resurrection (where appropriate).
Asks the Lord to comfort the family and expresses thoughts as the Spirit directs.
Closes in the name of Jesus Christ.

Simulated and Genuine Leather Scriptures: What's the Difference?

At LDS Bookstore, we have a variety of different scriptures to fit all of your studying needs. From quads, to bound Bibles and Books of Mormon, no matter what type of scriptures fit your personal study best, we have options for you. One option that is available though is one that not many people fully understand the differences, and that is the scriptures that are simulated leather and those that are genuine leather.

Simulated Leather

Simulated leather, sometimes referred to as “Vegan Leather” is a lower cost alternative to genuine leather, while still having the look of real leather. It is made by applying a lamination of a polyurethane finish to a base material, typically a mixture of cotton or nylon, and then a roller then applies an artificial grain pattern to the surface to imitate the look of genuine leather.

Another type of “Vegan Leather” is PVC Faux Leather Fabric. This type of simulated leather is composed of polyvinylchloride with stabilizers to protect the simulated leather, plasticizers to soften it, and then lubricants to make the material more flexible. This is then applied to the base material, which typically is made of polyester, cotton, nylon, or the like.

Simulated leather is a great alternative to the more expensive genuine leather, and is friendly to those living a vegan lifestyle. The only difficulty of simulated leather is that of longevity. Simulated leather ages faster than genuine leather, and different from genuine leather, the aging process is a little more apparent. However, simulated leather is far easier to clean with chemicals, or a variety of cleaning products that won’t damage or ruin the material. Genuine leather requires specific cleaning instructions and materials to keep the leather from being damaged.

For our scriptures here at LDS Bookstore, simulated leather typically has a brighter shine to it, and a softer feel than genuine leather. The colors appear to be brighter and more saturated, and a wider variety of colors are available with simulated leather.

Genuine Leather

Genuine leather is made from a variety of organic materials, but typically bovine hides. The natural collagen fibers are intertwined, which give the leather its superior durability. Though colors and finishes may vary, the composition of the material remains virtually the same.

Many of our leather bound scriptures are made from that same organic materials used in many leather products, which gives them durability and longevity. As genuine leather ages, it softens and creases begin to be seen throughout it. However, the durability of the leather remains very strong, and the creases become something that is unique to each individual scripture set. Though genuine leather is often more expensive than simulated leather, for durability and length of life, it is unmatched.

The material used to make our scriptures varies from leather to simulated leather, our ultimate goal is to provide our customers with quality items that best fit their lifestyle. In order to help you have the best Conference weekend possible, we've compiled a few tips and ideas for how to get the very most out of this special weekend. Scroll through to see more!

Take Notes

When we're listening to the wonderful talks of General Conference, we can receive powerful revelation for our lives. The words from the Lord's chosen Church leaders can penetrate our hearts and give us inspiration for new directions for our lives. Recording those thoughts and impressions can help us to turn those thoughts into actions, and make real and beautiful change in our lives. Follow Up On Your Commitments

After the final session of Conference, we are often left with a feeling of rejuvenation, excitement for the future, and a determination to make our lives better. As the days pass, sometimes we can fall back into our old ways and forget about those important impressions and commitments we had made during General Conference. To help with this, consider making reminders to follow up on your commitments from General Conference. One helpful way is to place your goals and commitments on sticky notes that you can put around your house. This way when you are going about your day, you'll be reminded of those important promises you had made to the Lord.

Prepare With Purpose

Our loving Father in Heaven wants us each to have a wonderful spiritual experience while watching General Conference. So much of what we can receive from General Conference is based on how we prepare for the lessons we will hear. Before General Conference, consider taking some extra time out of your day to mentally and spiritually prepare for the impressions and lessons you hope to receive. Take time to write down your questions and concerns, paired with prayer, to prepare for General Conference with purpose.

Share Your Thoughts

Another important way we can get the most out of our General Conference experience is to share our thoughts and impressions with our loved ones. By sharing a favorite quote, video, or talk on your social media accounts, you can help share the light of Christ with so many individuals around you. Additionally, one of the best ways to retain information is to explain it verbally to others. As you share your thoughts and impressions, those lessons will more fully stay within your memory.

Practice Self-Compassion

Sometimes as we listen to the messages of General Conference, we can feel a little discouraged that we're simply not doing enough. General Conference edifies and uplifts us in reminding us of the important things we should be doing to draw closer to our Father in Heaven. Sometimes though we can be a little too hard on ourselves. Our Father in Heaven loves us so deeply and personally, and rejoices in every action we do to draw closer to Him. Remember this as you listen to the words of the Church leaders, and make those commitments in a spirit of self-compassion to draw closer to Him.

Take Time to Ponder and Pray

Prayer is one of the greatest gifts our Father in Heaven has given us in this life. When the Gospel of Jesus Christ was restored to the Earth through the Prophet Joseph Smith, one of the most beautiful truths that was also restored was the Plan of Salvation. Sometimes referred to as "the Plan of Happiness" this wonderful plan set by our Father in Heaven and Savior Jesus Christ illustrates our purpose in life, and what we can expect in the the life after this one. As disciples of Christ, we often have opportunities to explain our beliefs and what we hope for when we talk about the life after this one. Premortal Life: God's Purpose and Plan for Us

God is the Father of our spirits and we are His children. He loves us. We lived as His spirit children before we were born on this earth. We were not, however, like our Heavenly Father, nor could we ever become like Him and enjoy all the blessings that He enjoys without the experience of living in mortality with a physical body.

God’s whole purpose—His work and His glory—is to enable each of us to enjoy all His blessings. He has provided a perfect plan to accomplish His purpose. We understood and accepted this plan before we came to the earth. In the scriptures God’s plan is called a merciful plan, the plan of happiness, the plan of redemption, and the plan of salvation.

"And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." - John 17:3

The Creation

Under the direction of Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ created the earth as a place for us to live and experience joy. In order to progress and become like God, each of us had to obtain a body and be tested during a time of probation on the earth. While on the earth we are out of God’s physical presence. We do not remember our premortal life. When we exercise faith, we draw closer to our Father in Heaven.

"Behold, the Lord hath created the earth that it should be inhabited; and he hath created his children that they should possess it." - 1 Nephi 17:36

Agency and the Fall of Adam and Eve

In the Garden of Eden, God gave Adam and Eve their agency. He commanded them not to eat the forbidden fruit, or the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Obeying this commandment meant that they could remain in the garden, but they could not progress by experiencing opposition in mortality. They could not know joy because they could not experience sorrow and pain.

The fall of Adam and Eve made it possible for them to learn and progress. It also made it possible for them to make wrong choices and to sin. In addition, they could now have children, so the rest of God’s spirit children could come to earth, obtain physical bodies, and be tested, creating this wonderful life all have the gift to experience.

"Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy." - 2 Nephi 2:25

Our Life on Earth

While we are in mortality, we have experiences that bring us happiness. We also have experiences that bring us pain and sorrow, some of which is caused by the sinful acts of others. These experiences provide us opportunities to learn and to grow, to distinguish good from evil, and to make choices. God influences us to do good; Satan tempts us to commit sin. As with physical death, we cannot overcome the effects of sin by ourselves. We are helpless without the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

"Choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." - Joshua 24:15

The Atonement of Jesus Christ

God sent His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to overcome the obstacle of sin in addition to the obstacle of physical death. We are not responsible for the Fall of Adam and Eve, but we are responsible for our own sins. God cannot look on sin with any degree of allowance, and sin prevents us from living in His presence. Only through the Savior’s grace and mercy can we become clean from sin so that we can live with God again. This is possible through exercising faith in Jesus Christ, repenting, being baptized, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end.

"And he shall come into the world to redeem his people; and he shall take upon him the transgressions of those who believe on his name; and these are they that shall have eternal life, and salvation cometh to none else." - Alma 11:40

The Spirit World

Eventually, all people must die, as this is the process by which we are transformed from mortality to immortality. At death our spirits go to the spirit world. Death does not change our personality or our desires for good or evil. Those who chose to obey God in this life live in a state of happiness, peace, and rest from troubles and care. Those who chose not to obey in this life and did not repent live in a state of unhappiness. In the spirit world the gospel is preached to those who did not obey the gospel or have the opportunity to hear it while on earth. We remain in the spirit world until we are resurrected.

"Now, concerning the state of the soul between death and the resurrection—Behold, it has been made known unto me by an angel, that the spirits of all men, as soon as they are departed from this mortal body, yea, the spirits of all men, whether they be good or evil, are taken home to that God who gave them life." - Alma 40:11

The Resurrection, Salvation, and Exaltation

When our bodies and spirits are reunited through the Resurrection, we will be brought into God’s presence to be judged. We will remember perfectly our righteousness and our guilt. If we have repented, we will receive mercy. We will be rewarded according to our works and our desires.

"And, if you keep my commandments and endure to the end you shall have eternal life, which gift is the greatest of all the gifts of God." - Doctrine and Covenants 14:7

Judgment and Kingdoms of Glory

During our mortal lives we make choices regarding good and evil. God rewards us according to our works and desires. Because God rewards everyone according to their desires and their deeds done on earth, there are different kingdoms of glory to which we may be assigned after the Judgment.

Those who have repented of their sins, received the ordinances of the gospel, and kept the associated covenants will be cleansed by the Atonement of Christ. They will be saved in the celestial kingdom (see Doctrine and Covenants 137:10). In the scriptures this kingdom is compared to the glory or brightness of the sun.

People who do not accept the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ in this life or in the world to come but live honorable lives will receive a place in the terrestrial kingdom. This kingdom is compared to the glory of the moon (see Doctrine and Covenants 76:71–80).

Those who continued in their sins and did not repent in this life or accept the gospel in the world to come will receive their reward in the lowest kingdom, which is called the telestial kingdom. This kingdom is compared to the glory of the stars (see Doctrine and Covenants 76:81–86).
